How do I earn CEUs?
Types of Continuing Education Activities
NMRID Members may have two free CEUs processed per year as a benefit of membership.
After members have used up their free processing allowance for the year, any other processing
will be charged at the member rates below.
Sponsor Initiated Activity
These are events offered, organized, or sponsored by an RID-approved Sponsor.
Be sure to provide the information about your last name and member ID number exactly as it appears in your account so the sponsors can process your CEUs efficiently.
Examples: Short courses, workshops, seminars, conferences, and distance learning (e.g., teleconferences, multimedia instruction materials, programmed learning materials, online courses, Webshops, workshops, etc.)
Workshops:
- Members: $25
- Non-Members: $30
Conferences:
- Members: $25
- Non-Members: $35
Participant Initiated Non-RID Activity (PINRA)
These events are not offered, organized, or sponsored by an RID-approved sponsor. You must have the activity approved for RID CEUs through and RID-approved sponsor prior to attending the activity — PINRA CEUs cannot be processed retroactively.
Examples: Auditing a college course, non-credit courses at an educational institution, corporate trainings, community education, school district in-service, organizational conferences/workshops, etc.
- NMRID Members: $10
- Non-Members: $20
Academic Coursework
CEUs from Academic Coursework can be credited after you have begun or completed the course but must be within your current cycle. Contact and RID-approved sponsor to process these CEUs.
Academic credit is converted based on the following:
- 1 quarter credit hour = 1.0 CEUs (10 contact hours)
- 1 semester credit hour = 1.5 CEUs (15 contact hours)
Example: Courses taken from a Council for Higher Education Accreditation (CHEA) accredited institution during the participant’s current cycle in which the participant received a pass or minimum letter grade of “C” (2.0 GPA).
- NMRID Members: $5
- Non-Members: $15
Independent Study
You MUST apply for and receive approval from an RID-approved sponsor before starting the activity. Not all RID-approved sponsors are approved to process Independent Studies, so please check with your sponsor first! Each independent study is limited to a maximum of 2.0 CEUs.
Examples: Research, initial curriculum development, study groups, independent reading or research, mentoring participation, the preparation of materials for publication, etc.
- Members: $25
- Non-Members: $35
Unaccepted Activities
The RID Professional Development Committee recognizes that these activities may provide valuable learning opportunities. An Independent Study may be designed to identify specific learning objectives to be accomplished by virtue of those opportunities (e.g., while it would not be appropriate to earn CEUs for serving on a board, one might design an Independent Study that identifies specific lessons learned as a board member).
Examples: Board/committee meetings, business meetings of the Association, Professional service delivery (interpreting), lunch/dinner/socials/entertainment, activities that are a part of one’s routine employment responsibilities.
Content Areas
Professional Studies
Professional Studies contain content that directly applies or affects the field of interpreting/transliterating. These are areas of investigation that enhance the interpreting process regardless of the setting. They are studies that deepen the member’s ability to provide excellence through their work. A minimum of 6.0 CEUs must be completed in this section during each Certification Maintenance Cycle.
Power, Privilege & Oppression
Refers to a phenomena by which members of a society are unfairly advantaged and may be unaware of, or unwilling to, recognize the advantage. The result is oppression at the systemic, societal, and individual level wrongfully limiting another’s access to resources. This is rooted in the perception of entitlement – or lack thereof- based on social group membership and may manifest in covert and overt practices/behaviors that seek to keep that advantage, and result in abuse of assumed power and privilege. All of which contribute to perpetuating the privilege, individual biases, and social and systemic oppression. A minimum of 1.0 CEUs out of the required 6.0 PS CEUs must be completed in this section during each Certification Maintenance Cycle.
General Studies
General Studies include topics that enhance the interpreter/transliterator’s base of general or world knowledge. The study must still be a legitimate educational program with clearly defined educational goals and measurable objectives. There are no minimum requirements for CEUs in this category, however, only two (2) of the eight (8) required CEUs will be counted towards certification maintenance.
